Illinois’ SAFE-T Act, passed in 2021, goes into effect which eliminates cash bail and implemented other criminal justice reforms. The law faced controversy due to concerns over public safety and its potential to make it harder for judges to detain offenders. The Illinois Supreme Court has put the law on hold as it considers arguments that it is unconstitutional. Other states are watching the case to see if they should adopt similar laws.
