Fire From the Rear

By Lars Larson

Due to a huge demand for this, I’m posting the speech I gave at the Lincoln Day Dinner Charity Dinner for Clark County Republicans 2017. Enjoy.

Good evening. It’s a pleasure to join with fellow conservatives tonight here in Clark County to pay tribute to one of America’s greatest Presidents, Abraham Lincoln.

Thank you for coming out tonight to support The Republican Party.

It’s not an easy task these days as those of us who work in the vicinity of “Havana on the Willamette” know that espousing conservative views these days in the parts can literally put your life and safety at risk.

A little over a week ago a Congressman was shot by a hateful liberal.

This week a prominent movie celebrity talked openly and to great applause about “the last time an actor assassinated a President” a clear reference to the man we gather here tonight to honor.

Just a few months ago a single name celebrity talked about “blowing up the White House” and she was lauded by the left for her courage. Of course the folks cheering her on were the type who think it’s cute to wear tiny pink knit hats as symbols of their right to kill the unborn. So consider the source.

Yesterday we learned that 30 members of congress who share our Republican Party ideals have been assaulted or threaten in just the last two months.

These are perilous times my friends.

But challenging times are nothing new for the Party of Lincoln. A political party that expects to accomplish a lot has to stick its’ neck out. So before I get to the bad news let’s take a moment to reflect on what Republicans have delivered for America…over the centuries and most recently.

150 years ago the Emancipation Proclamation…from a Republican President.

The end of the Civil War and less than a decade later the right to vote for women, from an amendment written by Republican Susan B. Anthony and introduced in Congress by Republican senator Aaron Sargeant. Sure it took fifty years to ratify but Republicans have always been a little ahead of their times.

A Republican president started the Panama Canal and Republicans elected the first woman to the House of Representatives and began the Hoover Dam. And in 1936 it was Republican American Jesse Owens who humiliated HITLER with 4 gold medals …and it was the President from that OTHER party who snubbed Owens by refusing to invite him to the White House or even send him a telegram. Republican Jackie Robinson opened up baseball.

The Civil Rights act, the Reagan tax cuts, the defeat of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War. All the actions of American Republicans.

We’ve had our share of victories over more than a century and a half…but as you know “to whom much is given, much will be required”. And whether you read it in the book of Luke or heard it from Uncle Ben in the first Spider Man movie, you know what it means.

It won’t come easy. It won’t come without pain or effort or sacrifice.

President Lincoln knew that. 154 years ago, in the month of January, President Lincoln confessed something stunning to a Senator.

This remarkable man said he was more worried about “the fire in the rear” than he was by the confederate forces in front of him.

The Lincoln we all learned about in school is the mythic Lincoln…the President who held a whole country together merely with the strength of those two Rail Splitting hands.

You can’t imagine him facing any opposition or dissent or controversy….but he did and he knew it at the time and it concerned him more than those confederate cannons.

TODAY WE HAVE A PARTY AND A PRESIDENT WHO FACE SIMILAR CHALLENGES.

HE’S UNDER ATTACK FROM THE COPPERHEAD DEMOCRATS TO HIS FRONT AND FROM MEMBERS OF HIS OWN PARTY TO THE REAR…AND FROM THE LEFT, MOST OF THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA.

YET CONSIDER WHAT HES ACCOMPLISHED SO FAR ON THIS 24TH DAY OF JUNE…7 MONTHS AND FOUR DAYS SINCE HIS INAUGURATION.

OPTIMISM.

He’s appointed a solid constitutionalist justice to restore the Supreme Court majority and if reports in the last few days are correct he’ll soon get to replace another one…and likely the loony Ruth Bader Ginsberg not long after that.

He’s gathered the strongest and most experienced cabinet since President Reagan and maybe better…and he has the intelligence to let them do their jobs.

30 executive orders in the first hundred days.

13 congressional review act orders in the first hundred: more than any President in history.

The Wall Street journal confirms that he has rolled back more regulations already than any president in history INCLUDING REAGAN.

28 new laws have been signed into law in the first hundred days…more than any President in American history
CATCH THE PATTERN? An historic Presidency, not that the Chicken Noodle News network is going to tell you that.

From the day he was elected to March 1st, the Dow Jones industrial average rose just short of 3 thousand points to just over 21,000.

For the average American, housing sales are red hot right now.

And for illegal aliens, illegal entry to our country is down 67 percent and we haven’t even built the wall.

When Syria used poison gas against civilians, Donald Trump ordered a strike on a key airfield and flattened it with little collateral damage and the Syrians have been relatively quiet.

When Syrian jets hit the wrong folks we shot one of those Russian-supplied jets down.

When we found a network of terrorists hiding underground, Trump authorized the Mother of all Bombs…and they died in their hiding hole.

President Trump has frozen federal hiring, he’s approved new pipelines, and he’s begun to dismantle the job killing environmental regulations invented by a previous President who didn’t bother to use the Congress for new laws.

For decades, American taxpayers have born an unfair burden of NATO defense…but now NATO allies have increased their support by ten billion dollars because Trump had the guts to tell them to pay what they’d agreed to pay.

About this time last year most of my brethren in the news business declared that Trump could not win the nomination…but he did.

They declared that if he won the nomination it was impossible for him to win the Presidency…but he did.

They declared that his candidacy would be a disaster for the DOWN BALLOT senators and representatives…but for the most part those who lost last fall were those who adopted the NEVER TRUMP banner.

And this year we’ve been hearing about litmus test special elections where Trump’s lack of popularity would give seats to the democrats.

THE DEMOCRATS LOST EVERY ONE OF THOSE CONTESTS TO THE PRESIDENT WHO’S GOING TO MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

I haven’t had this kind of optimism about my country since the 80’s.

But now we have a job to do.

Push back the ridiculous made-up charge that Trump is in league with Vladimir Putin.

Point out that if anyone, it’s Hillary Clinton who conspired with the Russians to own American uranium and pad the pockets of crooked Hillary.

It’s time to remind the democrats that, as a recent former President once said, elections have consequences.

It’s time to tell RINO Republicans like Paul Ryan, Mitch McConnell, Lindsay Graham-nesty and John McCain to put on their big boy pants and do the work we voters sent them to Washington to accomplish…or hang it up and go home before we voters do it for them.

It’s time to make America great again.

Abraham Lincoln did that a century and a half ago despite the fire he took from the rear.

This President can do the same…and we need to tell President Trump that we have his six.
